Man shot dead by police in London after going on stabbing spree

A man has been shot dead by armed officers in south London after going on a stabbing spree.

Multiple people are thought to have been injured.

"We can confirm the man shot by police at around 2pm today (Sunday local time) - has been pronounced dead," Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.

Police say it's a terror related incident and the circumstances are still being established.

"At this stage it is believed a number of people have been stabbed," a police statement said.

"We believe there are two injured victims. We await updates on their conditions.

"The scene has been fully contained."

Police said more information will be available shortly.

Several videos of the scene were posted on Twitter, but not verified. In one, a man can be seen lying on the ground of a shopping street and at least two armed police officers are pointing their guns from behind an unmarked car with its blue lights flashing.

Another video showed helicopters overhead and police cars in the surrounding streets.

The last such incident in London was in November, when police shot dead a man wearing a fake suicide vest who stabbed two people to death and wounded three more before being wrestled to the ground by bystanders. Authorities called that a terrorist attack.
