Coronavirus: 2yo boy in South Africa tests positive after flying from New Zealand

A two-year-old boy returning to South Africa from New Zealand has tested positive for coronavirus.

The boy returned to Western Cape after travelling from New Zealand, South Africa's Health Minister Dr Zwelini Mkhize said in a statement.

It is unclear what flight the child travelled on.

New Zealand's Ministry of Health could not confirm the specific case but said it would be sharing more information about likely cases at its media presentation later on Thursday.

There are currently 116 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Africa. President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday declared a state of disaster in the country and implemented urgent measures to stops the virus' spread.

Bars and restaurants have been ordered to close by 6pm from Monday to Saturday and by 1pm on Sundays.

Ramaphosa also warned South Africans against drinking excessive alcohol so their immune systems would not be compromised, the South African news website reported.

On Wednesday Samoa's Ministry of Health said the country had its first suspected case of COVID-19, after an Auckland resident showing symptoms of the virus arrived in the country on a flight from Auckland.
