A Florida sheriff has "highly recommended" residents protect themselves during the riots by shooting looters who try to break into homes.
During a press conference on Monday Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd addressed the protests in the United States which began after a police officer knelt on the neck of George Floyd for nine minutes.
"Let there be no misunderstanding, at all, that if you come here to riot, to loot, to injure people, we're going to lock you up in the county jail," Judd said.
He continued that he will protect those protesting peacefully but will "hunt you down if you engage in any criminal conduct".
Judd said he had received information on social media of some residents threatening to "take their criminal conduct into the neighbourhoods", but said it was not a good idea.
"I would tell them if you value your life, you probably shouldn't do that in Polk County. Because the people of Polk County like guns, they have guns, I encourage them to own guns, and they're going to be inside their homes tonight with their guns loaded."
"And if you try to break into their homes tonight and try to steal, to set fires, I'm highly recommending they blow you back out of the house with their guns."
But while calling for violence against protesters, Judd condemned Floyd's death.
He said protesters should continue to keep their voices heard and keep the focus on Floyd.
"All of that ugliness has taken away from what we're united about," he said of the looting and other unlawful activity, the New York Post reported.
"We're united about the conduct that you saw with George."
Some American commenters have praised Grady for his response, with people saying he should "run for Governor" or President.
"If I lived in your county you would have my vote. Couldn't agree more," one person wrote.
"Grady Judd you are not only Polk County's sheriff, you are America's sheriff! You keep us safe! You do us proud!" another said.
Other commenters, however, have criticised the sheriff for inciting unnecessary violence.
At least 14 people have died in the protests across the US so far.
