A German prosecutor has written to Madeleine McCann's parents claiming to have evidence she is dead, according to a report.
Last week, there was speculation by prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters that Madeleine was no longer alive based on information obtained that he did not elaborate on.
"All indications we have got, that I can't tell you, points in the direction that Madeleine is dead," he later told UK broadcaster Sky News.
There are now reports prosecutors have reiterated those claims to the parents of Madeleine - who was three-years-old when she vanished from a hotel room in Portugal in 2007.
According to Sky News, prosecutors have sent a letter to Gerry and Kate - Madeleine's parents - reportedly confirming her death but still not elaborating on any evidence.
The report seems to contradict a Sunday Mirror newspaper interview at the weekend, where Wolters backtracked and clarified "there is no forensic evidence" indicating Madeleine is dead, adding "there may be a little bit of hope".
Madeleine's case came back to light earlier this month after London's Metropolitan Police revealed a 43-year-old German man was being treated as a "suspect". He is currently imprisoned in Germany for the rape of an elderly woman and drug offences.
German police have said the suspect was believed to be living near the resort at the time Madeleine vanished. Police said he worked in the catering industry while also burgling holiday flats and drug dealing.
On Monday, Hugo Pereira, the Mayor of the area where Madeleine disappeared, told Sky any associates of the suspect needed to turn themselves in.
Local newspaper Sol reports that wells in the area are starting to be searched by Portuguese police for any signs of a body.
There remains global public interest in the disappearance of Madeleine, which UK authorities continue to treat as a missing person inquiry.
