A 13-day-old baby in the UK who tested positive for COVID-19 has died, the NHS says.
The death was announced as part of the UK's daily COVID-19 death toll on Thursday local time.
The baby is believed to be the youngest child with no underlying health conditions to die from COVID-19 in the UK. The previous was a 13-year-old boy in London.
It is not yet known how the baby contracted the virus.
On Monday a statement from Sheffield Children's Hospital said a child who had tested positive for COVID-19 had died, but its age was not given.
The child was admitted in a critical condition and tests showed it had COVID-19. The hospital did not confirm if it was the same child.
So far there have been over 300,000 confirmed cases in the UK and over 42,000 deaths.
Around 20 children under the age of 18 are reported to have died after testing positive for COVID-19. Most had underlying health conditions.
In May medical experts started investigating a link between coronavirus and Kawasaki disease after a rise in children being diagnosed with the inflammatory disease in the UK, USA and Italy.
Reports of cases raised concerns that COVID-19 could pose a greater risk to children than had been understood.
