An Australian man has died after a shark bit his leg off, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
The man, believed to be 60, was surfing off Kingscliff in northern NSW on Sunday when the attack occurred.
"Police have been told several board-riders came to his assistance and fought the shark off before the injured man could be helped to shore," police said in a statement.
Witnesses at the scene believe the shark was a great white, around three metres long.
"The actions of those people was nothing short of heroic in making every attempt to try to save this gentleman," NSW Police duty officer Matt Kehoe told 9News.
Unfortunately, the man received a severe injury to his leg, with the Sydney Morning Herald reporting his leg was bitten off.
Beaches between Kingscliff and Cabarita have been cleared of swimmers and surfers and will remain closed for the next 24 hours.
9News reports a Westpac rescue helicopter is tracking the shark's movements, and authorities have permission to catch or kill it if it is found.
