A suspect in a fatal shooting at a federal judge's home in the US has been found dead on Monday.

The FBI identified Roy Den Hollander as the "primary subject" of the shooting at US Federal Judge Esther Salas' home on July 19, the US Attorney's office said in a statement.

The judge's son, Daniel Anderl, was killed and her husband Mark Anderl, a defence attorney, was injured, Chief District Judge Freda Wolfson told The Associated Press. Judge Salas, who was in the basement at the time, was unharmed.

Mr Den Hollander, 69, was a lawyer who once argued a case before Salas, according to CNN.

Investigators found an empty package addressed to Judge Salas along with Den Hollander's dead body on Monday, the NY Times said.

Den Hollander described himself as an "anti-feminist," on his website, and was best known for unsuccessful lawsuits challenging women, said NBC.

In 2015, Den Hollander filed a lawsuit that was being heard by Judge Salas, involving a woman who wanted to register for the men-only military draft.

Salas sided against a part of Den Hollander's arguments, but also allowed the lawsuit to continue on, as told by CNN. Hollander exited the case in June 2019.

In his memoir published online, Den Hollander called Salas "a lazy and incompetent Latina judge appointed by Obama". He also wrote, "at first, I wanted to ask the Judge out, but thought she might hold me in contempt," according to NBC News.

Salas became New Jersey's first Latina US District Court judge in 2011 after she was nominated by President Barack Obama.

The FBI says the investigation will remain ongoing.
