Australian police officer brings newborn baby back from brink of death

A Queensland police officer who brought a 10-week-old baby back from the brink of death says the incident went from "zero to a million" in a matter of seconds.

Baby Lucas' mother rushed him to the police station in early September when he stopped breathing after she had fed him. The police station was just a few doors down from her home.

Luckily Sergeant Paul James, an officer with 30 years experience, was there to help. He performed CPR on the tiny infant and was able to resuscitate him.

James told 7 News when Lucas was brought in he was "non-responsive, blue [and] not breathing".

But after 30 seconds of CPR Lucas gasped, then cried. Police put him in the recovery position until paramedics arrived and whisked the baby to hospital.

He spent five weeks in Queensland Children's Hospital where it was discovered he has hypothyroidism - a condition which can disrupt the heart.
