A man has died after being attacked by a shark at Broome's popular Cable Beach on Sunday morning.

The 55-year-old man is understood to have been swimming alone when attacked, suffering serious injuries to his hand and thigh.

Emergency services responded to reports of a shark bite at 8:42am (local time). The victim was recovered from the water and treated by police before St John Ambulance paramedics arrived.

The man, believed to be a local, died from his injuries at the scene.

Surf lifesavers were not patrolling the beach at the time as they finished patrolling last week, and it is now 'off-season', The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Cable Beach has been closed to the public.

The area has not had a fatal shark attack in almost 27 years.
