A 30-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly throwing a two-month-old baby from the window of a 13th-floor apartment.
Daria Shavelkina, a consultant for the luxury cosmetics company Clarins, allegedly threw the baby girl to her death while the child's mother, Yaroslava Korolyova - a friend of Shavelkina's - was in another room.
The baby was found dead after falling 40 metres from the 13th-floor of a high-rise residential tower in Moscow, Russia, on December 4.
According to Moscow-based daily newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets, Shavelkina will remain in police custody until February and a murder case has been opened.
Shavelkina reportedly told officers that "voices" in her head had instructed her to throw Korolyova's two-month-old daughter out the window. However, an article by Ukraine Today - citing Russian news agency TASS - said the 30-year-old was unable to explain her motives to investigators.
The report said Shavelkina, herself seven months pregnant, had an unconfirmed diagnosis of polymorphic psychotic disorder, a psychotic illness known to cause highly variable hallucinations, delusions or perceptual disturbances.
Korolyova was "in deep shock" following the incident and required medical assistance.
