An American woman has uncovered a secret apartment hidden behind her bathroom mirror.
Samantha Hartsoe, 26, was attempting to find the source of a cold draught flowing through her house when she made the surprising discovery of the three-bedroom apartment.
"Curiosity killed the cat, curiosity is going to kill me. I can't not know what's on the other side of my bathroom," the Roosevelt Island resident told the NBC.
Hartsoe posted her findings on TikTok, with the series of videos going viral online.
She made the find alongside her flatmate, who in the video encouraged her to smash through the wall using a makeshift headlamp and hammer.
Inside the space are open windows, bags of rubbish and plenty of wide-open windows.
"I was kind of expecting there to be somebody, especially with the water bottle being there," she told New York magazine. "And that definitely put me on edge."
Despite the complexities of the New York real estate market, Hartsoe believes the apartment was unlivable, due to ripped-up floors, exposed piping and no bathroom facilities.
Harsoe told The Guardian the building manager was also unaware of the hidden space.
"I think everybody in New York has such small apartments, you don't know what you're going to find and everyone's hoping for more space," she said.
