A prominent UK Black Lives Matter activist is fighting for her life in hospital after being shot in the head in South London.
In a statement on the Taking the Initiative party Facebook page, the group stated the shooting happened in the early morning of May 23 after "numerous death threats."
"It is with great sadness that we inform you that our own Sasha Johnson has sustained a gunshot wound to her head. She is currently hospitalised and in critical condition."
However, London Metropolitan Police said in a statement that there was no evidence to suggest the attack was targeted, The Guardian reported.
The Guardian reported the shooting was believed to have occurred outside a house where a party was taking place.
A friend of Johnson's told the BBC she felt the incident was more likely related to rival gangs than her BLM activism and didn't think she was the intended target.
Local police said Johnson remained in hospital with "life-threatening injuries," according to Reuters.
"We are all hoping that this young woman's condition improves," detective chief inspector Jimi Tele said in a statement provided to the outlet.
"Our investigation is in its early stages and urgent enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances."
The Taking the Initiative party stated Johnson is a mother of three and is a "strong powerful voice" for people.
"Sasha has always been actively fighting for black people and the injustices that surround the black community, as well as being both a member of BLM and a member of Taking the Initiative Party's Executive Leadership Committee."
Several tributes on social media have been made from around the globe since people first heard of the attack.
A well-known US activist Tamika Mallory posted on her Instagram account: "Pull through sis! People think it's a game out here. Smh. #SashaJohnson"
A prominent English Labour MP David Lammy tweeted: "This is gut wrenching. Praying for Sasha Johnson, her family and friends that she makes a full recovery #BlackLivesMatter".''
Another MP from London Harriet Harman tweeted: "Whoever carried out this dreadful shooting of Sasha Johnson needs to be caught quickly. Give any info you have to MPSSouthwark. Reported death threats will need to be investigated. Wishing her a full recovery. With thanks to the NHS for much needed expertise and care."
