Coronavirus: Victoria, South Australia avoid more COVID-19 but Queensland, NSW outbreaks still expanding

Fears of fresh COVID-19 outbreaks in Victoria and South Australia have been allayed for now, but Queensland and New South Wales continue to see new community cases emerge.

Queensland recorded another pair of locally acquired cases on Thursday, while New South Wales (NSW) detected 24 new infections in the community to see its outbreak extend to 195 cases.

But in Victoria and South Australia - two states where community transmission was detected on Wednesday - there were no new cases to report, alleviating concerns over full-blown outbreaks there.

The COVID-19 numbers for Western Australia and the Northern Territory - parts of which remain in lockdown due to community cases - were also favourable, with just one local case in the latter.

New South Wales

Another 24 community cases were detected in NSW in the 24 hours to 8pm on Wednesday (local time), health officials reported.

There have now been 195 locally acquired cases reported since June 16, when the first case of the Bondi cluster was reported. All but 20 community cases are linked to that cluster.

Of the new cases, nine were in isolation throughout their infectious periods, three were in isolation for part and 12 were infectious in the community.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian urges anybody in the state who leaves the house to assume they have the virus or will come into contact with people with the virus, and to act accordingly.

"This is so important for us moving forward," she told a press conference.

NSW Health is urging people to get tested if they are suffering even the mildest of symptoms and have already undergone a COVID-19 test.

Treatment for 150 COVID-19 cases - two in intensive care and one on ventilation - is ongoing. The vast majority are being treated in non-acute, out-of-hospital care.

Greater Sydney remains in lockdown, with tight restrictions in place until at least next Friday, July 9.

Queensland

Two new locally acquired cases were reported in Queensland on Thursday, while another two were recorded in quarantine facilities.

One of the community cases is a close contact of a previous case and one works at the Brisbane International Airport, at the check-in counter for Qatar Airlines.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young says this is likely where she would've picked up the infection, as she was checking in passengers and involved with flight crew.

Parts of Queensland are currently in lockdown and will be until at least 6pm on Friday (local time).

But Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the state hit new testing and vaccination records over the last reporting period, and says that combined with just two new cases is "very encouraging news" ahead of a decision on whether to end the lockdown.

However she warned residents they're "not out of the woods yet".

"We'll have to see what happens over the next 24 hours. We will talk to you tomorrow in relation to whether or not we can [come out of] lockdown," she says.

Victoria and South Australia

Both of these states had fresh COVID-19 scares this week, with Victoria recording another case on Wednesday as South Australia detected community transmission for the first time since November 2020.

Victoria would've been particularly fearful given Melbourne had just come out of a lockdown in June, but fortunately no further community cases were recorded on Thursday.

There are currently eight active local cases in the state, with 225 primary close contacts around them.

South Australia's scare on Wednesday came when four members of the same family, who'd travelled to Adelaide together from the Northern Territory, tested positive for coronavirus.

It later emerged a member of the family had worked at the Tanami Desert Mine in the Northern Territory, where community cases had been recorded last week.

However there were no new cases there on Thursday either, with South Australian health officials saying it's believed no members of the family had been out in the community while infectious.
