A 65-year-old old woman camping in a small town in the US state of Montana has been killed by a grizzly bear.

The victim, identified as Leah Davis Lokan, was camping on Ovando's Great Divide Mountain Bike Route when the grizzly bear dragged her from her tent while she was sleeping in the early hours of Tuesday (local time).

Police said it's believed the bear involved in the attack has since been killed.

"Last night, the Powell County Sheriff's Office took a report from a resident who came home and found her door ripped off and large claw marks were present. A short time later a male grizzly bear was killed in the area.

"Early indications are that this is likely the bear that was involved in Tuesday's attack," the sheriff's office said in a statement on Saturday.

The "absolutely gorgeous" Great Divide Mountain Bike Route has a distance of around 4000km and is popular with hikers and bikers in summer, according to AP.

Officials said Tuesday's incident showed people need to be prepared while camping in grizzly bear country.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victim of the bear attack," police said.

There are about 1000 bears in the wilderness where Ovando is located - an area that extends all the way to the Canadian border, AP said.
