New Lynn attack: Incident in LynnMall Countdown makes global news as world reacts

The horrific attack that took place in an Auckland supermarket on Friday has made global news.

Police have confirmed a man who entered the LynnMall Countdown on Friday afternoon and injured multiple people was shot dead. The six injured have been taken to hospitals throughout Auckland, with three in a critical condition.

Reports of the incident are now beginning to appear in overseas media and foreign governments have reacted.

"On behalf of the Australian government, I offer my sympathies to those injured in the shocking attack in #Auckland today," Australia Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said on Twitter.  "Thankfully @nzpolice was able to respond quickly & professionally. 

"This tragic incident shows the ongoing need for vigilance in dealing with terrorist threats."

The BBC is reporting the man was killed after "he entered an Auckland supermarket and stabbed multiple people", noting that witnesses had described a "scene of hysteria" afterwards.

CNN headlined its story: "Man shot dead by New Zealand police after shoppers attacked in supermarket". It said that video had been posted online showing "panicked shoppers running out of the LynnMall Shopping Centre and looking for cover as the situation unfolded".

The incident has also been reported on by wire service Reuters.

"Police did not say if they believed there was more than one attacker. Nor did they suggest a motive for the attack," Reuters said.

The outlet provided background on other recent attacks in New Zealand.

"New Zealand has been on alert for attacks since a white supremacist gunman killed 51 people at two mosques in the city of Christchurch on March 15, 2019," the outlet said.

"In May, four people were stabbed in a supermarket in Dunedin on New Zealand's South Island."
