A man has reportedly died after jumping into a lake in Brazil to escape a swarm of bees - only to drown and be eaten by piranhas.

The 30-year-old was fishing with two friends in a farm lake in the municipality of Brasilandia de Minas - in South Brazil - when they were attacked by bees on Sunday.

All three jumped into a farm lake to escape the bees, only to discover the water was full of piranhas. The two friends got to safety but the third could not be found.

The fire department was called for assistance and eventually found the man's body four metres from shore.

When the body was recovered, it was discovered that the carnivorous fish had disfigured the man's face and other parts of his body, according to the fire department.

It's not yet known if the attack came before or after the man's death, with investigations continuing.

There are about 30 piranha species in the world, all of which live in South America's Amazon River basin.

Fatal attacks on humans are relatively rare.
