A woman has been arrested after a 10-year-boy was mauled to death by a recently-adopted pitbull while playing at a friend's house in Wales.

Emergency services were called to the house in Pentwyn, Penyrheol about 4pm on Monday (local time) where 10-year-old Jack Lis was found with unsurvivable injuries, ITV News reported.

He died at the scene and the dog, described by local media as an "aggressive" and "powerful" pitbull bought only a few days prior, was shot dead by police.

Nearby residents have spoken out about the traumatic incident.

"It's a big shock," neighbour Ricky Willis told ITV. "I've lived on this road for 46 years and I’ve never seen anything like this happen."

Another local said they felt "sick to my stomach".

"We went out to see what was going on but the police asked us to go back inside while they put the child in the ambulance. So we did, out of respect."

Police say the incident remains under investigation but one woman has so far been arrested.

"Officers investigating a report of a dog attack in Caerphilly have arrested a 28-year-old… on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control," local police said in a statement.

"She has since been released on conditional bail."
