A British family is suffering from "extreme shock" after their child was killed following a collision with a skier on an alpine ski slope in France.

A man has been charged with the manslaughter of a 5-year-old girl named Ophélie.

The girl had been taking a lesson with other children on the beginner's slope at the resort of Flaine in France when the skier hit her, the New York Post reported.

Witnesses claim the 40-year-old man, who has not been named, was skiing "at high speed" over "a slight bump" before colliding with the child, the Mirror reported.

The Mirror reported the man was a French volunteer firefighter from Saint-Jeoire and tried to administer first aid to the child, but she never regained consciousness and died on the way to the hospital.

"They are suffering from extreme shock, as are many others involved in this tragedy," the Mirror reported Mayor of nearby Arâches Jean-Paul Constant said.

The skier is cooperating with authorities.

The crime is punishable with up to five years in prison and a fine equivalent to around $125,000.
