A newborn baby boy was mauled to death by the family's dog in the UK while his mother was asleep and the dad was outside having a cigarette, a coroner's inquest has heard.
Emergency services were called to a property in Cambridgeshire about 2am on November 18, 2018, the Mirror reported.
Paramedics attended the scene and 2-week-old Reuben McNulty was airlifted to the hospital where he died just under a month later.
The inquest into Reuben's death on Tuesday has now revealed the newborn's parents weren't supervising the baby nor the offending dog, a Staffordshire bull terrier, at the time of the attack.
According to the Mirror, Reuben's father Dan McNulty came inside after his cigarette and found him with blood all over his baby son.
"I think the f**king dog has attacked him," McNulty said in a call to emergency services. "My partner was asleep, I just heard crying."
Coroner Simon Milburn, concluding the coroner's hearing, said the incident was "horrific and tragic" which was the result of an "unintentional short period of inattention".
Local media said neither of Reuben's parents were in attendance at Tuesday's hearing.
The offending dog was destroyed after the attack.
