A police investigation is underway into a man's death in Australia after his friend allegedly cut off his leg with a circular saw.

The 66-year-old lost his leg during an incident at Innisfail's Fitzgerald Park in north Queensland at the weekend. The victim was found by members of the public in the early hours of Saturday after succumbing to his injuries.

"Police will allege these two people were known to each other, the nature of that relationship is forming part of our investigations," acting Det Insp Gary Hunt said, as reported by 7 News.

"During my 34 years as a police officer, I've never experienced a situation as we are presented with here today," he told reporters on Sunday.

The alleged offender, a 36-year-old man, cut of the 66-year-old's leg as part of "an arrangement between the two people", Hunt said.

AAP reported the suspect was due to appear in court on Monday.
