A box filled with human heads destined for medical research was stolen from a truck used to transport body parts in the United States.

The truck was parked in the Central Park suburb of Denver, Colorado at around 11am on Thursday when someone broke in and stole the box of human remains, Fox21 News reports.

The human heads were in a blue and white cardboard box about 50 x 40 x 45 centimetres in size, sources told the outlet, with the label 'Science Care' on the sides of it. Science Care is a body donation programme that helps improve scientific research and education.

Denver Police say the human remains were en route to be used for medical research.

They couldn't release any more information since an investigation is active and ongoing.

Central Park local Isaac Fields, who every day takes his dog to the dog park near where the human heads were stolen, told Fox21 News the incident is "pretty shocking".

"I guess I don't see too many strange things happening around here usually, but, you know, you never know," he says.

Other neighbours are wondering if the thief knew what they were stealing or just took the first item they saw.

No arrests have been made yet.

Denver Police are urging anyone who knows where the remains are or who the thief is to contact them.
