Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison rugby tackles child in football game

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has rugby tackled a child to the ground in a campaign soccer match in Tasmania on Wednesday evening.

Morrison was visiting the Devonport City Soccer Club to promote a $3.5m grant for the club's Valley Road grounds including a new grandstand.

Morrison was invited to join in a training match with the under-8s, where for most parts, ambled around the field providing little assistance for his teammates.

But as Morrison got more involved in the game, he had an awkward and funny moment when he stumbled and knocked over one of the players - Luca Fauvette- to the ground before embracing him in a bear hug.

Morrison can be heard saying it was "a bit of a rugby tackle" after knocking Fauvette over.

The kid was unharmed from the rugby tackle, with Morrison patting Fauvette on the back as the kid got up with a big smile on his face.

The club posted on Facebook that "the latest star of the election is OK and looking forward to being the star of the show at school tomorrow!"

"We think Luca showed plenty of determination and effort to stop the PM scoring at all costs!"

Morrison, who's in the final few days of his election campaign, joked: "I'm surprised he hasn't been taken to hospital".

The Prime Minister addressed the incident on Twitter afterwards, praising Fauvette for "being such a good sport".

"I spoke to Luca and his mum Ali tonight to check in on him and he was in good form," he said.

"Great to be able to have a good chat to him about his love of football and to hear he's had three hat-tricks in his budding career already."

But not everyone was happy about the incident with Australian of the Year Grace Tame raising concerns about the boy's wellbeing.

"As much as I love taking the mickey out of politicians, I can't help but feel for the young boy who just got tackled to the ground," she wrote on Twitter.

"While his image is reappropriated for jokes, and footage of him falling is replayed nationwide, he's probably too young to fully understand it all."

Tame said it looked like an accident but felt for the boy with the moment "being recycled on a national stage".

Elizabeth Howes, who said her son was also on the field at the time, was not happy about the incident.

"You were playing with my child in that game," she told Australian media outlet 9News.

"I'm furious that you were allowed to play and potentially injured my kid. He didn't know who you were, he thought the people taking pictures of him was awesome."

It's not the first time a politician has caught the headlines for bulldozing an unsuspecting kid during a fun sports game.

Boris Johnson, who was London mayor at the time, knocked over a 10-year-old boy during a touch rugby game in Tokyo in 2015.

Johnson had the ball in hand and was running down the mini-turf pitch towards the try line, where he bowled over young Toki Sekiguchi on the way.

The boy was not harmed and was soon up and running again.
