A man in Japan has taken his love of dogs to the extreme by "becoming an animal".

The Japanese man known on social media as 'Toko' has paid  ¥2 million (NZ$24,097) to look like a dog, specifically a collie.

The Daily Mail reported the canine wannabe worked with Japanese company Zeppet to make the man a realistic collie costume.

The costume took Zeppet 40 days to make and was shipped to the man.

Toko has uploaded videos of him in the dog costume, with his introduction video being viewed over 600,000 times.

The man told the Japanese magazine Mynavi: "I thought that a big animal close to my size would be good considering that it would be a realistic model, so I decided to make it a dog."

People online had mixed feelings about the man's decision with a number of commenters on his YouTube videos.

One user commented: "Congratulations! You even seem very friendly like a real dog!"

Another user commented: "What is the world coming to?"

The man was thrilled with his costume, thanking Zeppet for his costume.

"I ordered a costume! Thanks to you, I was able to fulfil my dream of becoming an animal!"
