A pet monkey wearing a tiny bulletproof vest and camouflage jacket has been killed in a cartel shootout in Mexico.
The owner, a man in his 20s, was one of 11 cartel members killed - said to be a part of Mexico's infamous criminal group La Familia Michoacana.
Since the deaths, a strange emotional tribute to the monkey has begun to circulate on social media.
In a memorial picture, the 'narco monkey' is named as El Changuito and is described as being just one year old.
While some users assumed it was fake, The Sun reported police have now confirmed the death of the monkey.
According to The Sun, the spider monkey was found with his arms extended as if it was holding the owner, who carried it by the shoulders.
Along with the bulletproof vest and camouflage jacket, El Changuito was also wearing a nappy.
Local authorities have since taken the monkey's body away and will investigate the likelihood that the spider monkey, a protected species, was illicitly trafficked by the drug gang.
