A United Kingdom Conservative MP has lashed out at his fellow Brits who are taking precautions as the nation is hit with an unprecedented heatwave.
Chairman of the 'Common Sense Group' Sir John Hayes earlier in the week accused the UK of being "frightened" of the record-breaking heatwave that could lead to thousands of deaths.
"This is not a brave new world but a cowardly new world where we live in a country where we are frightened of the heat," he told the Telegraph.
"It is not surprising that in snowflake Britain, the snowflakes are melting."
Hayes' comments have since resurfaced as the Met Office issued a Red Alert warning for Monday and Tuesday as temperatures are expected to hit 40C.
"The idea that we clamour for hot weather for most of the year and then shut down when it does heat up is indicative of the state in which we now live."
Met Office Chief Executive Penny Endersby said in a video shared on Twitter that the extreme heat the UK is facing "is absolutely unprecedented".
"Here in the UK, we are used to treating hot spells as a chance to go and play in the sun. This is not that sort of weather," she said.
"Our lifestyles and our infrastructure are not adapted to what is coming."
Endersby urged UK residents to treat the warnings issued as seriously as people would when it comes to wind or snow.
"Stay out of the sun."
