A body has been found during the search for a missing heiress who was abducted while jogging.
Teacher Eliza Fletcher, 34, vanished during her regular 4am jog in the Tennessee city of Memphis on Friday (local time).
The mother of two was violently forced into a black SUV after being stalked by a man who waited for her to run past him, a police affidavit obtained by the New York Post alleges.
Fletcher is the granddaughter of billionaire philanthropist and hardware businessman Joseph Orgill III who founded Orgill Inc, one of the largest family fortunes in the US's deep south.
On Tuesday (NZ time), police said a body has been found in a Memphis neighbourhood but the identity has not yet been confirmed.
After Fletcher was reported missing, her family released a video statement offering US$50,000 for information to help find her.
"More than anything we want to see Liza returned home safely," her uncle Mike Keeney said in the video.
Video surveillance of the kidnapping and a DNA sample from a pair of sandals left at the scene helped officers locate and detain her alleged abductor Cleotha Abston.
Tennessee authorities obtained surveillance footage of the kidnapping which allegedly showed Abston running "aggressively toward the victim" before forcing her into the passenger's side of the vehicle, the documents said.
Police believe she was seriously injured in the abduction, the affidavit said.
Abston, 38, had spent 20 years in jail for kidnapping prominent Memphis attorney Kemper Durand.
When Abston was 16 years old he forced Durand into his own car boot at gunpoint.
Durand managed to escape after Abston forced him to withdraw money from an ATM at a petrol station and a security guard walked past.
He pleaded guilty to aggravated kidnapping and robbery in 2001 where he received a 24-year sentence.
