Dramatic collision between truck and school bus in Melbourne, 27 students hospitalised

Several people have been hospitalised and one teenage girl has been airlifted to hospital after a truck collided with a school bus in Melbourne. 

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a truck crashed into a school bus carrying 27 female students, four adults and a bus driver. 

7News reports the bus was carrying students and adults from Ballarat's Loreto College, on the Western Freeway in Melbourne's northeast. 

It's believed the school group were travelling to Melbourne Airport for a trip to the United States for a NASA space camp in Florida, News.com.au reported. 

Dramatic pictures from the scene show the bus on its side down a bank, with suitcases strewn across the field. 

While what looks like a freight truck is in the middle of the grass island of the freeway. Pictures show the cabin of the truck crushed as a result of impact from the collision. 

7News reports a teenage girl was airlifted to the Royal Children's Hospital with serious injuries. The male truck driver was rushed to the Royal Melbourne hospital with serious injuries too. 

A woman in her 40s was taken by road to hospital in a serious but stable condition with lower body injuries, 7News reports.

A man in his 50s was treated for lower body injuries and also driven to hospital in a serious but stable condition. 

7News reports the remaining students and adults were transported to various other hospitals in Melbourne, in stable conditions. 

Local police have urged parents to stay away from the scene and call the local police station instead. 

Motorists are urged to take an alternative route while authorities work to clear the dramatic crash.
