Former Kiwi soldiers, navy officers, and more helping with flood recovery in small Australian community

A group of Kiwi veterans have flown across the ditch to help with the flood recovery in a small Australian community.

Four people were killed when floodwaters rose above roofs in the northern New South Wales town of Lismore. Several months after the deadly disaster, families are still living in tents as their town slowly recovers.

Taskforce Kiwi, a group made up of former soldiers, firefighters, police and navy officers from New Zealand, has spent the week helping the community.

Leader Richard Adams said what the group has encountered is "grim".

"This was six months ago now, but it could have been last week. The town's still getting back on its feet."

The group has been helping repair homes, deliver supplies to families and clear vegetation in case fires follow the floods.

"They are very grateful a bunch of random people turning up, and a bunch of volunteers to help them along," said Adams.

Adams said the help is a two-way street. The group are using the trip to learn about disaster recovery so they can help flood-hit communities in New Zealand.
