Queen Elizabeth's death: King Charles and Prince William met in Wales by independence protesters

King Charles completed his four-nation tour with a visit to the Welsh capital where he was received with cheers of God Save the King.

But he was also met by a protest calling for Welsh independence, with some reluctant to see Prince William take on the traditional king-in-waiting title of 'Prince of Wales'.

His last visit was as their Prince but today King Charles touched down as their monarch.

As His Majesty set foot on Welsh soil a 21-gun salute let the waiting crowd at Cardiff Castle know he was there.

"Two flasks of coffee since I been here, bursting for the toilet, but I'm not leaving my spot!" royalist Antony Sceell told Newshub.

"We've brought Luna along to witness it, and she's gonna marry Louis as well one day, so yeah, and then she's gonna be the Princess of Wales," royalist Vicki Rees said.

Given the title at just nine years old, Charles was the longest-serving Prince of Wales in history.

On Saturday, the first words he spoke to the Welsh were in their native tongue.

Speaking his mother's exact last words from her last visit to Wales 11 months ago.

"Diolch o galon," King Charles said.

It means heartfelt thanks and King Charles extended his heartfelt thanks for the support he has received.

This is the last stop on the King's four-nation tour and the crowd here in Cardiff has been waiting to greet him with anticipation and excitement.

But a smaller crowd gathered outside the castle walls to make a different call - one for independence.

The King has handed the title of Prince of Wales to his son William but some say neither is their Prince.

Though their cries for change were no match for those in support of their new royal couple.

"Oh! I think we got the creme de la creme, haven't we! You know Wills and Kate they can't go wrong can they, they're absolutely marvellous," royalist Lorna Austin said.

"Really excited I think William's going to bring some real fresh energy to the role," royalist Gary Piazzon said.

A role that will no doubt involve navigating a national conversation about constitutional change.
