Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle to remain empty following Queen Elizabeth's death

Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle will remain empty for a while as the Royal Family has no plans for anyone to move in following Queen Elizabeth II's death.

King Charles and Camilla would not be moving into Buckingham Palace for at least five years because the palace will be getting a £369 million (NZ$725 million) renovation, The Sun reported.

The Queen usually spent weekdays at Buckingham Palace and stayed at Windsor Castle during the weekends.

Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where the Queen died earlier this year, is set to be opened to tourists and will have no royals living there.

The Sun reported a royal source said: "It was previously said that William and Kate would move into Windsor Castle, but there are no plans for them to leave Adelaide Cottage."

As Prince William and Princess Kate have no immediate plans to move into Windsor Castle, there is speculation about whether or not Prince Harry and Meghan would move in if they decided to return to the UK.

The Sun reported the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were previously disappointed when they didn't receive the 1000-year-old castle and received the much smaller Frogmore Cottage instead.
