Shocking footage has emerged showing a woman pickpocketing a dead man after he was run over by a truck in downtown New York to the horror of most locals, but not all of them.

The video, obtained by the New York Post, shows a thief wearing white pants with a black jacket jokingly skipping over to the truck before shimmying under it and reaching for the dead man's wallet.

New York police said the man - believed to be in his 50s - was crossing a busy Manhattan street at around 11:30am on Thursday (local time) when he was run over.

This sickening crime left police unable to identify him or notify his family of his death, sources said, according to the New York Post.

Most onlookers were shocked by what they were seeing, but one person, who was seemingly unbothered by the sight of a dead person, encouraged the woman on.

"Go ahead, gangsta! Go ahead!" one man said as he watched the roadway robbery unfold.

Witnesses called police about the robbery but they have been unable to arrest the suspect who is wanted for grand larceny, police sources said, according to the New York Post.

Police also said no charges have been filed against the driver of the truck who ran over the man.

Local residents in New York who were shown the video reacted in horror.

"It's like the Gladiators. Nobody came in to stop? That's even more disturbing," said 83-year-old Elma Kanefield.

Marco Nieves, 51, told the New York Post he was "lost for words".

"To see somebody dead under a truck and actually do that - that's horrible," Nieves said.

Theo Cooper, 25 said the shocking scene did not make him miss New York.

"I am kinda disappointed, I didn't think New York was the kind of place where that would happen," Cooper said.

"Sure, we're used to being all grumpy and frustrated at each other, but we're also supposed to stick up for each other and not like convince each other to do terrible things."
