Four former daycare workers in the US have been charged after one of them wore a "Ghostface" mask from the film Scream and terrified the young children.

A video posted to social media shows one of the former teachers at Lil' Blessings Child Care and Learning Center in Hamilton, Mississippi walking around a classroom full of young children in the mask. The kids can be heard screaming.

At some points, the woman in the mask is inches away from the face of the pre-school children, who are crying and looking terrified.

Another woman can be heard telling the kids to clean up and be good.

Monroe County Sherriff's office said on Friday (local time) Sierra McCandless, Oci-Anna Kilburn, Jennifer Newman and Misty Shyenne Mills were each charged with three counts of felony child abuse.

Sherriff Kevin Crook said in a Facebook post earlier this month the "videos made him sick to the stomach".

"As a dad and as someone who has great compassion for those who can't defend themselves, I admit it was very hard to watch these videos today; and my initial reaction was the same as most anyone else I would think..."they deserve to be charged.

"My heart and prayers go out to the parents who are dealing with these same emotions right now. We have a 17yo, a 13yo, and a 2yo in our home right now, so I get it, trust me," Crook posted.

The daycare owner Sheila Sanders told the Monroe Journal the employees had all been fired.

"I wasn't here at the time and wasn't aware they were doing that. I don't condone that and never have. I just want to say it's been taken care of," she told the Monroe Journal.
