NASA's Artemis I mission is almost halfway through its six-day journey to the moon, but what's the point of the historic event?
Auckland University Astrophysicist Dr Nicholas Rattenbury told AM the mission is an "inspirational exploration".
"What are we going to discover when we send technology which is now 50-60 years advanced of the last time we sent people to the moon?"
He said the discovery could be "new and exciting".
"Imagine what happens when you have young people growing up in an age where we have now sent people back to the moon, after so long."
Rattenbury said this mission will test out the spacecraft that will take humans further than they've ever been before.
