A toddler has died of starvation after his father passed away at home, leaving the young boy with no one to take care of him.

Their bodies were found by US police after they hadn't been heard from in weeks.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office recently released the official causes of death of David Conde Sr, 59, and David Conde Jr, two, nine months after the pair were discovered inside their home in New York.

The father died of natural causes resulting from a heart attack and his son died from malnourishment sometime later. The toddler's death has been ruled as accidental, the sheriff's department said.

"It is believed that Mr Conde passed away first, and the child was not able to obtain any nourishment after his father passed," the statement said.

Police found the pair deceased in their apartment bedroom while carrying out a welfare check as David Sr had not been heard from for weeks.

The pair were last seen on January 22 and were found by authorities on February 15, NBC News reported.

The toddler's obituary stated he was born with an undisclosed medical condition and had just learned to walk after undergoing several surgeries and months of rehabilitation.

"[He was] a beautiful baby boy with curly locks, that had a determined smile and sweet disposition," it stated.

David Sr had custody of the child and authorities have since located and interviewed the child's mother, NBC News said.
