An American tourist was gruesomely killed after she was cut by a boat propeller while trying to retrieve her lost jandals in the ocean.

Natalia Andrea Larranaga Fajardo, 26, was on holiday in Colombia when the tragic accident occurred.

The Californian was on a boat off White Wata Beach in San Andres on November 27 when she lost her jandals off the side of the boat.

Fajardo dove into the sea to find her lost shoes but when she was in the ocean she was struck by the boat's propeller.

The boat involved in the incident was reportedly carrying 24 tourists and two crew members who witness the brutal accident. The US Sun reported the onlookers were screaming as the sea turned red with blood.

The woman sustained serious injuries to her legs, lower back and buttocks.

Bleeding heavily, Fajardo was taken by jet ski to a hospital on the island, where she underwent multiple blood transfusions and surgery to repair her arteries, the Daily Mail reported. Medics also had to resuscitate her after she suffered a cardiac arrest.

Fajardo was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) after emergency surgery but suffered another, fatal cardiac arrest.

San Andres officials are now reminding swimmers to keep clear of moving boats and to notify the crew if entering the water.

Colombia's maritime authority is investigating the incident.
