A family in Cairns has been left devastated after a crocodile snatched up and killed their dog while they were on a morning walk.
On Wednesday (local time), the Benn family were walking on a footbridge in Kamerunga, a suburb in Cairns, when the crocodile pulled their labrador, Indie, into the water.
7 News reported Alan Benn's daughter Alias shared the horrific experience online and said the dog "didn't stand a chance".
"She was taken in one bite and dragged into the water," Alias said.
After the dog's horrific death the Benn family put up a sign near the bridge to urge more action to be taken and warn others about the crocodile.
The sign read: "Will a kid be next?"
Alan Benn told 7 News children also often fish along the banks nearby.
"Why should we have to be worried about bloody crocodiles?"
7 News reported a 2.4-metre crocodile was later found in the river and was rehomed to either a farm or a zoo.
However, the Benn family claimed the crocodile which took their dog was a lot bigger.
Queensland's Department of Environment and Science's Simon Booth told 7 News people need to remember to stand away from the water's edge.
"This will significantly reduce the risk," Booth told 7 News.
Indie had been part of the Benn Family for nearly 11 years.
