The Australian family of a teenage boy killed with a screwdriver by a birthday party gatecrasher say they want his killer to "rot in hell".
7News reports the now 18-year-old, whose identity cannot be revealed, appeared in the Supreme Court of Victoria on Monday after previously pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Jason Langhans, 17.
It's reported Crown prosecutor Jane Warren told the court Langhans, an apprentice plumber and enthusiastic fisherman, was acting as a peacemaker at the gatecrashed 16th birthday party when he was struck in the head with a screwdriver in March 2021.
The young teen died three weeks later in hospital because of his injuries. His father Paul Langhans told the court he begged the doctors to "save my boy" at the time.
"I watched him take his first when he entered the world and watched him take his last," Paul said.
"My heart is shattered."
In a victim impact statement by Langhans' grandparents Cheryl and Peter, they questioned "who takes a screwdriver to a girl's 16th birthday party".
The court heard how the 18-year-old killer had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and paranoid schizophrenia. It was also revealed he had drunk half a bottle of vodka and smoked cannabis before crashing the party, armed with a screwdriver.
7News reports he stabbed the screwdriver almost 8cm into Langhans's brain.
The court heard from psychiatrist Rajan Darjee the 18-year-old's intoxication, alongside his PTSD and paranoid schizophrenia, was not a good mix.
It heard about the teen's early life in Afghanistan too, his arrival at Australia's Christmas Island detention centre and his troubling experience at school once he moved from Christmas Island to mainland Australia.
7News reports the teen was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on August 24.
