Australian police 'perplexed' by timeline in case of missing Kiwi man Brett Orme in Brisbane

It's been a week since Kiwi man Brett Orme was last seen in Brisbane and local authorities are becoming increasingly concerned about his welfare.

Homicide detectives and police have labelled Orme's disappearance as suspicious after the 54-year-old was last seen leaving a property in the suburb of Fitzgibbon, on August 11.

On August 16 Orme's car was found locked and abandoned at Tinchi Tamba wetlands, Bald Hills.

On the same day, his cell phone was found discarded 17km away from where he was last seen at a popular walking track at Ironbark Gully. It had a selfie on it from the same location.

"Between the selfie being taken over at Ironbark Gully, and the location of the vehicle, we are perplexed as to what has happened," Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said.

Police are now trying to piece together the timeline of events that led to the 54-year-old's disappearance, Newshub Australian correspondent Emma Cropper told AM on Wednesday.

"There were a lot of gaps in where he had been. When police put out this plea asking for any dashcam vision, any sightings of Brett Orme, the public tip-offs came flooding in. They've been able to expand where they're searching."

"There'd been sightings of him and his ute a few days earlier in and around the same area. So they do hold grave concerns."

She told AM Orme phoned his son while at the popular walking track - which is understood to be a very normal phone call, where they spoke about meeting up on that day.

According to the ABC, Det Sup Massingham said police are still unsure about whether Orme was "met with foul play over at … Ironbark Gully, or whether … something has occurred here [at Tinchi Tamba]".

Det Sup said Orme’s whanāu are "traumatised" by his disappearance and police are urging people who have information about his disappearance to contact them.

"This is indeed a tragic matter and we require public insight to fill in what, at this stage, is a timeline with many gaps," he said.

Police have followed up on "several" Crime Stoppers leads as more witnesses come forward, Queensland police said in an update to Newshub on Wednesday.

Further locations are being explored between Iron Bark Gully and Deep Water Bend.

Police will extend their search for Orme on Wednesday in bushland further west from Iron Bark Gully towards Samford using State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers and police.
