A beef Wellington pie was reportedly the lunchtime dish that killed three people and left one fighting for his life following a suspected mushroom poisoning in Australia.

According to police, 45-year-old Erin Patterson remained the prime suspect in the investigation after she cooked the meal at her home but did not become ill.

Erin prepared the pie, which often calls for the addition of mushrooms, as the main course of the meal at her home in Leongatha on July 29.

The guests included former parents-in-law Don and Gail Patterson, Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson along with her husband, Ian.

Her ex-husband Simon Patterson was also invited however pulled out last minute after recovering from a mystery stomach illness that had him in hospital for months.

The Pattersons, both 70, have since died, as has Heather, aged 66.

Heather's husband, 68-year-old Baptist church pastor Ian Wilkinson, remains in a critical condition in hospital.

According to the Daily Mail, Erin cooked the meal to try and win back her ex-husband and convince his parents she was good enough.

A source close to Simon spoke of his mate having no interest in getting back together with the mother of his two children.

"She wanted to get back with Simon and the family didn't want Simon to get back with her because they were worried about her mental state," he told the Daily Mail.

"She was basically petitioning to get back with him and the family didn't think that was a good move," he said.
