The decomposed body of a Gold Coast man could have sat in his home for more than a year before it was discovered by police.
The body of Tomislav Nemes, 69, was found after his relatives in another state asked police to conduct a welfare check on April 17, ABC reported.
Detective Acting Inspector Mark Proctor of Queensland Police said on Tuesday a 70-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man who were still living at the home "are certainly persons of interest".
"Mummified is probably the incorrect term - the body was in an advanced state of decomposition," Det Insp Proctor said.
"It did have a mummified look ... but there was absolutely no attempt to preserve the body in any way. It wasn't wrapped or anything like that."
Nemes' wife, 70, and stepson, 48, are thought to have lived alongside the remains for more than a year and didn't disclose the death to family or the authorities.
The 69-year-old's cause of death is yet to be determined.
Det Insp Proctor said police are trying to determine if his wife and stepson knew he was dead inside the house at the time.
"We are not looking to lay charges at this point in time, but we are fully investigating the incident. We are being assisted by the homicide investigations unit," he said.
"We ask anyone who may have attended that property for any reason in the last few years if they could also come forward and assist police."
A crime scene was declared at the Gold Coast home and Nemes' death is being treated as suspicious.
Those investigating his death haven't found any clues in Nemes' medical history because he had a clean bill of health before he died, 7News reported.
"There are a few minor ones that we're going through with these doctors, but there's certainly no major life-threatening illnesses or anything like that at this stage," Det Insp Proctor said.
Any friends, family, or associates who may have been in contact with Nemes are asked to get in touch with police.
