The parents of an Australian man accused of murdering his wife and baby have spoken out for the first time.

It comes after two bodies were found in a Rockhampton, Queensland home on Thursday, during a police welfare check, 7News reported.

Rockhampton is a town of 83,000.

Matthew Cox, 31, was allegedly responsible for the deaths and police charged him with two counts of murder just hours later.

Police found the victims Tayla Cox, 31, and 11-week-old baby Murphy, with apparent lacerations on their bodies.

In a statement, his parents said there were very few details about the alleged crimes.

"The family are devastated by the news today that we have not only lost a beautiful daughter-in-law Tayla but also our much-loved granddaughter Murphy," the statement said.

They added they were in an "absolute state of shock" and asked news media to respect their privacy.

Detectives are combing through crime scenes at the family home in the suburb of Park Avenue, as well as an apartment block in Fortitude Valley where it's believed Cox was staying.

Cox is believed to have flown to Brisbane on Tuesday night, two days before the bodies were discovered. Police have since seized a car from Rockhampton Airport.

It's alleged Cox reported the deaths to police on Thursday. Investigators said the Cox family was not known to authorities.

Cox is due to appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
