An Australian man who was set on fire in an early-morning attack tried to get help from McDonald's staff, according to NSW police.

The 23-year-old sought help after he was allegedly assaulted and set on fire near the McDonald's on King Street in Newcastle just after 3am Thursday, police said.

Newcastle is a two-hour drive north from Sydney.

Emergency services rushed the victim to John Hunter Hospital, until he was transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital.

Local media reports say the victim was involved in an altercation with two men on King Street before the situation unfolded.

He's now in a serious but stable condition.

Police investigations continue.
