An outdoor lift in Bali that killed several people after it faulted has been revealed as an Instagram-famous experience for tourists and visitors.
Five housekeepers at Ubud's Ayuterra Resort were inside the lift when the cable snapped, sending the elevator plummeting down a 100m ravine to the ground.
Two of the workers were 19 years old, and others were aged 20, 23 and 24.
Three of the workers died in hospital, and two died at the scene.
The well-known outdoor lift, made of glass, was used to transport hotel guests and workers on a track that moved up and down a steep slope.
Lift-users were taken on a journey through lush tropical plants and stunning scenery.
"Make your memorable experience on your special occasion with us," the hotel advertises.
According to 7News, local authorities are investigating what caused the cable to snap, with preliminary information suggesting the lift was too heavy.
"It is possible that the steel cable was not strong enough to pull the load and the safety wedge or brake does not work," Ubud police chief Made Uder said.
The resort owner, Linggawati Utomo, later expressed her condolences to the victim's family, 7News reported.
"All costs for funeral rites and burial will be borne by us," she said.
"We will also give the families some compensation."
