An Aussie renter might just take the cake for living in the worst-ever flat after he moved into what could only be described as a nightmare.
The man thought he had found a nice and affordable room to rent in Sydney but boy was he wrong.
His ordeal started not long after he moved into his room and he started hearing rats running around in the ceiling.
In addition to the rats, the man soon found he was sharing his room with yet another pest. Within his walls and floors was an investigation of German cockroaches.
German cockroaches are some of the most troublesome pests as they produce faster than other types of roaches and develop a resistance to many chemical pesticides.
"The cockroaches ... are everywhere, and they fall on my face while I sleep," the man told 7News.
He called his agent every day for a week but was told to send an email with all the information and photos of the infestation.
But his renting horrors didn't stop there. After a period of rain, the man's roof began to leak and eventually his electricity went out.
He had to throw hundreds of dollars of food out and couldn't charge any of his devices which he needed to work – but still the agency told him there was little they could do to help him, he said.
"I tried to tell them 'imagine if you had to live here for a week'," the man told the local news outlet. "It's 2023, I can’t accept this."
Eventually, the man was offered $50 off his rent but he said it isn't good enough.
The man told 7News he feels incredibly let down by the rental system.
According to NSW Government's Fair-Trading Act a rental property must always be fit to live in.
It said landlords are responsible for repairing and maintaining the property so that it is in a "reasonable state of repair" and tenants have "the right to a premises that is clean and secure".
