A house has exploded in the United States as police attempted to execute a search warrant.

Police say the man fired a flare gun several times inside the Virginia property on Monday night (local time), while officers attempted to look around.

Police were initially investigating the property in Arlington County, near Washington DC, after reports the suspect had fired a flare gun from the house, according to the Associated Press.

Once officers arrived at the scene and attempted to contact the man, the house completely exploded.

The sound of the explosion was heard just after 8:20pm, causing power to go out in the area, and shaking the neighbourhood.

Flames could be seen shooting in the air and stretchers were seen outside the house, Associated Press reported.

A video of the loud explosion posted to Twitter/X shows part of the roof and other debris flying into the air, followed by large clouds of smoke.

The huge ball of fire also let off firework-looking sparks which were seen floating high in the air.

The sound of dogs barking, alarms going off and panicked residents yelling and swearing could be heard in the video.

Firefighters were reportedly still working to extinguish the blaze at 10pm that evening.

Police are yet to confirm if there are any deaths as a result of the explosion, but confirmed the man was inside the home when it occurred.
