King Charles delivers Christmas message to the Commonwealth for second time

King Charles has delivered his annual royal message, speaking of the highlights of 2023 in a statement of hope and gratitude.

In line with the coronation theme, "Called to Serve", King Charles thanked those who have served their communities.

King Charles went on to thank volunteers around the world and touched on memories from his coronation day.

"My wife and I were delighted when hundreds of representatives of that selfless army of people, volunteers who served their communities in so many ways and in such distinction were able to join us in Westminster Abbey for the coronation earlier this year," The King said.

"They are an essential backbone of our society"

The pre-recorded address saw the King speak from a standing position in the central room of Buckingham Palace with a large Christmas tree in the background.

Reflecting on the year, which included a major food waste project and an environmental speech to world leaders at COP28, the King praised everyone who cared for others.

"Over this past year, my heart has been warmed by countless examples of the imaginative ways of which people are caring for each other," King Charles said.

"Going the extra mile to help those around them simply because they know it is the right thing to do."

Last Christmas, his speech urged the public to find hope at a time of "great anxiety and hardship", when some were struggling to "pay their bills and keep their families fed and warm".
