A German man is in a coma after his penis was severed and, in a shocking twist, police believe his pet dog may be the culprit.
Emergency services were called to the scene in the early hours of Tuesday (local time) after neighbours reported incessant barking coming from the man's house.
Upon arrival, emergency services heard groans coming from inside the home, local media reported. Officers broke down the door to find the 66-year-old man injured and his dog nearby.
The man was rushed to hospital and put into an induced coma, according to local media.
"One hypothesis, of course, is that the dog, which is about the size of a Jack Russell terrier, bit off the penis and ate it. The wound could also be a bite wound," Police Chief Insp Frank Lemanis told German news outlet Bild. "But it's also possible a sex accident or a crime."
Since the man is in a coma, authorities are appealing for witnesses to find answers to what occurred. His severed penis remains missing.
Despite the shocking nature of the case, this is not the first time a man's genitalia has been bitten by a dog. In Australia, a man had his penis completely "de-gloved" while swimming at Bondi Beach in 2015.
The aftermath of the dog attack was aired on Network 10's Bondi Rescue where a man approaches lifeguards saying, "I've been bitten by a dog on my f**king d**k".
The Staffordshire bull terrier bite had completely torn the skin and the man had to receive 100 stitches, but fortunately, his genitals were saved.
