The condition of a nine-month-old baby who was stabbed during the deadly Sydney mall attacks over the weekend has improved.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park revealed the status of the baby, the daughter of victim Ashlee Good, has improved from critical to serious.
Speaking in a press conference on Monday, Park said he was "delighted" to report her condition has improved over the past 12 hours, and described the update as "incredibly relieving".
"In the darkest of times comes the brightest of lights," he said.
"She's come down from critical, and there is a chance over the course of the next day that she'll be moved on to a ward."
The killer, 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, entered the Bondi Junction Westfield mall and started stabbing people with a large knife at around 3pm (local time) on Saturday.
At least 17 people were stabbed including the baby, who was lying inside a pram which was being pushed by Good at the time.
The baby's mother, 38-year-old Ashlee Good, was one of six victims killed by Cauchi. Five of the six killed in the attacks were women.
Good reportedly handed over her baby to two men, in a bid to save her. She later died while her baby was rushed to hospital by paramedics.
Just hours before the stabbing spree, Good took to social media to share a video of her daughter eating a snack in her car seat to the song My Girl by The Temptations.
Good's family and loved ones remembered her as an "all round outstanding human", in a statement released on Sunday.
"Today we are reeling from the terrible loss of Ashlee, a beautiful mother, daughter, sister, partner, friend, all round outstanding human and so much more," it read.
"We appreciate the well-wishes and thoughts of members of the Australian public who have expressed an outpouring of love for Ashlee and our baby girl."
They praised the medical team at Sydney's Children's Hospital, where Good's daughter currently remains, along with NSW Police for their efforts on the day.
The family also shared their appreciation for "the two men who held and cared for our baby when Ashlee could not".
"Words cannot express our gratitude."
