A day after he was almost killed, Constable Elvis Poa was wheeled out of hospital waving and surrounded by his Kiwi family.
Poa's father, Hori, says the injured officer is "doing fine considering".
The 35-year-old was on duty in Sydney when a man allegedly tried to kill him. He was approached from behind and stabbed in three times.
"That 33-year-old has produced a kitchen style knife about 30cms long and stabbed him in the head a couple of times," Detective Superintendent Martin Fileman said.
He also applauded the injured officer, who bravely tried to chase down his alleged attacker in the city.
"We're faced with the situation that if an officer is injured, they keep going, and this officer did, he chased him."
After a tense standoff, two officers took down the man with a single taser and he was charged with attempted murder.
Poa was taken to hospital with two skull fractures. His parents, brothers and sisters were hugging outside after he weas discharged.
"All I can say is God was on his side," Hori said.
"We are very proud of him," his mum added.
The attack happened just days after NSW Police put out a call to recruit Kiwi cops to help fill holes in its frontline.
