A group of young car enthusiasts say they are tired of being branded ‘boy racers’ and are taking a stand against illegal street racing.
The Southern Car Enthusiasts meet every week to cruise Dunedin streets, but insist they are not hoons.
They claim cruises are a safe, legal alternative to the so-called ‘drag trains’ along Dunedin's motorways in which hundreds of cars drive in convoy at high speeds - often racing three or four wide to their destination.
Police have long battled illegal behaviour by boy racers, including alcohol-fuelled street races, some causing accidents and death.
The enthusiast’s cars are just as turbocharged as those driven by illegal hoons.
With impressive sound systems and in-car movie setups, some members spend over $20,000 kitting out their pride and joy.
There are a few girl racers in this testosterone-driven world who are keen to learn more than just where the petrol goes in.
The lawful hoons are comfortable with moves by the Government to crack down on lawbreaking boy racers.
They say anything that gets ‘the idiots off the streets’ will make life easier for them as well.
